Urban Kibbutzim

A number of people are waiting for Hybrid RBE communities to start up so that they can join in.

My message to you is that you DON’T HAVE to wait.

You can start your own community NOW.

This format is called Urban Kibbutzim (u.k.), and there are communities like that existing in Israel. You can visit them or e-mail them or call them and try to find out how they are doing things.

1. You don’t need many people. You can start with only ONE other person. (Of course the more the merrier.) To start with only one other person is MY idea. The Israeli u.k. waited until they had about a dozen people.

2. You don’t need to buy land. You can live in adjoining apartments. If you want you can also have a separate apartment (maybe larger than the individual ones) for TV’s, hanging out, parties, meetings, etc.

3. You don’t have to wait for start up funds. The income that you already have will suffice.

4. You can work out by yourselves how this u.k. will work. You can decide if you’d like to make a common fund from the salaries of everyone, whether you will have meals together or not, who will cook, how to decide who will clean up the common apartment, how much pocket money each one will have. how to handle the meetings, how to accept new members, etc.

5. Once there are a number of u.k.’s you will be able to arrange workshops with the members or representatives of them all to discuss anything. Those participating will report back to all the individual u.k.’s and they will then decide what to do about the new ideas. Maybe together you can put out a bulletin with news of what’s happening in the u.k.’s and that can be used to promote the idea or to promote the idea of hybrid RBE in general.

I could go on and on and suggest the many many different topics that arose in my kibbutz (not urban) and the kibbutz movement, but I hope you all get the idea.
